Gloria Grabmayer, MSc.

Setting

I work with you on an equal footing and with empathy, offering a non-judgmental space to address life’s diverse challenges. My approach is characterized by clarity, a focus on solutions and — where appropriate — humor. Drawing on my varied professional experience and training, my therapy style is trauma-informed, LGBTQIA+ sensitive and where helpful I incorporate your bodily sensations into the treatment process.

The goals of our collaboration are guided by your individual wishes and form the foundation for our joint therapeutic work.

As a clinical and health psychologist, I utilize scientifically recognized treatment approaches and methods. Systemic psychotherapy and family therapy also allows for a broader perspective on your experiences, considering how your issues are embedded within your social environment and the dynamics of interaction at play (impact on your mental state and clinical symptoms).

Methodologically I often use pictographic methods (i.e. overview sketches or metaphors) as well as tools from systemic therapy (i.e. system board, constellation work, timeline) or hypnotherapy (i.e. imagination, trance).

Any of your personal information - including the fact that you may be in therapy - will be treated as strictly confidential.
Under certain specific circumstances there are exeptions to the mandatory confidentiality (i.e. to prevent the acute threat to the life or health of a person, including your life).

Specializations

Drawing on my professional experience across various fields of psychology and psychotherapy, I have gained expertise in working with diverse age groups (children, adolescents, adults and elderly people). In addition to treating mental health conditions (i.e. depression, anxiety, panic disorders, addiction, trauma-related disorders) and providing psychological support for various psychosomatic and physical illnesses (e.g., chronic pain conditions, CRPS), I have also worked with violent and delinquent behavior.

In my private practice, I focus primarily on working with couples and individuals (minimum age requirement: 16 years old) regarding the following issues:

  • Support in navigating life transitions (e.g., pregnancy/childbirth, parenthood, infidelity/extramarital affairs, separation, (peri-)menopause, career changes) and coping with distressing experiences (e.g., attachment trauma, illness, physical limitations, mobbing, fertility planning, traumatic birth experiences, peripartum psychotherapy, loss, bereavement)
  • All matters related to sex therapy (e.g., sexual desire/lack thereof, performance pressure/fear of failure, relationship conflicts arising from differing sexual needs or desires, gender and body dysphoria)
  • Treatment of psychiatric conditions (e.g., depression, anxiety disorders, (complex) post-traumatic stress disorder) and management of psychosomatic complaints (e.g., back- or abdominal pain, headaches with no physiological cause)
  • Strengthening self-worth, developing a coherent self-image, fostering self-confidence and a sense of competence
  • Crisis intervention and support for individuals affected by extraordinary events (e.g., witnesses to accidents, first responders), including after experiencing injuries or fatalities
  • Supervision and personal development for trainees in clinical psychology and health psychology

Couples counseling/therapy focusses on any topics that regard the dynamic of your relationship. Topics vary widely, such as:

  • dealing with divergent needs/desires/life plans, including situations that require a decision (i. e. unclear stance on the desire to have children, different visions for the future, conflicts with parents/children)
  • all sex-therapy-related topics in couple relationships (e.g., differences regarding sexual frequency, desires or exploration; how do deal with absent or excessive sexual desire/libido; kink and fetishes)
  • reoccurring conflicts, developing a helpful culture of debate/conflict
  • desire to change current communication patterns within the relationship (i. e. communicating your needs clearly)
  • changes in relationship structures/crises within a relationship (i. e. infidelity, opening up of a monogamous relationship, changes in polyamorous relationships, if needed - assistance in a separation process)

Family counseling/therapy can be helpful in various situations/phases (i. e. improvement of communication, support during life changes within the family, dealing with conflict, developing self-effective forms of contact to family members or dealing with demarcation desires). A decision which family members are invited into the therapy/consultation process at a specific time is always made in accordance between the client and therapist. If the process can benefit I also offer family constellation as a method.

For relatives of patients with mental illnesses I also offer supportive treatment/counseling to assist with the increased burden.

Candidates in specialist training for clinical psychology or health psychology in Austria can complete their required hours for supervision and therapeutic self-awareness under my guidance.
